What is a lightning protection system?

Lightning protection systems are used to prevent a lightning strike from damaging a building, its stonework and its internal electrical equipment. They can prevent fires caused by electrical strikes as well as electrocution. A lightning protection system is usually a metal rod that is mounted to the top of a building that intercepts a lightning strike and transfers the electrical current down a wire and into the ground safely.

Without full testing of lightning conductor systems every year, your property could be in danger in the event of lightning striking your property. Having a tried-and-tested lightning protection system installed by a reliable and professional expert in the industry means you can avoid the hassle and costs of lightning damage if the dangerous event should occur.

Lightning Protection Design & Installation

Fitting a lightning protection system to your property is the best way of protecting it from the immense damage that lighting can cause.

Across the UK, there are hundreds of injuries to individuals every year because of lightning strikes and follow up secondary electrical surges.

While you may be struggling to remember the last time you saw lightning, it is a real and present danger in Scotland and is part of a legal requirement for building owners to protect occupants from.

As a leading Roofing, Building Maintenance and Rope Access Specialist, we can fit lighting protection systems to a building with great ease – regardless of the difficult access nature of the building structure.

Annual Lightning Protection System Testing

Lightning Protection Systems must be professionally tested once a year (at least) to ensure that they are capable of handling a lighting strike and safely transferring the electrical current to a safe earthing point. Lightning Protection Testing is required for compliance with the Electricity at Work Act 1989, BS6651 and BS EN 62305.

Whilst carrying out routine surveys during the course of our works, we have often discovered lightning conductor products and systems, (which are being relied upon to protect buildings and equipment from taking a direct lightning hit) are not up to standard and offer little or no protection whatsoever. Lightning protection systems should be tested annually and any necessary maintenance or upgrading works carried out as a result, to ensure continued resistance to lightning damage.

Many people shrug off lightning protection risk assessment and lightning protection systems and products as they think they will never need them. However, lightning doesn’t need to strike twice to cause damage – just once.  We don’t want any of our customer-base to suffer the damage and inconvenience by not taking the necessary steps and having a lightning protection system installed.

Balmore Specialist Contracts are trusted to supply and maintain lightning conductor systems in building across Glasgow, Edinburgh and further afield.  This ensures the safety of the public, staff and buildings in full compliance with BS:EN 62305 standards, and that meets the criteria required for insurance purposes.

A well-designed lightning protection system gives security without affecting the appearance of a building as aesthetics are often of key importance. Wherever possible and practical, a suitable part of the structural framework will be utilised thus reducing visible impact and maintaining the integrity of the building.

This is naturally an important point for older and historic buildings. Most clients want a compromise between protecting their property with a lightning protection system and preserving the look, feel and beauty of the historical structure in question. At Balmore, we understand the need to save the original features of your property and we work with our clients to find the best ways to do this.

Once we have been contracted to supply and fit or maintain your new lightning conductor product/system, a Contracts Manager will head a team of suitably qualified Lightning Conductor System Engineers from our head office in Glasgow to ensure that work is progressed in a professional & efficient manner.

Method statements and risk assessments are carried out prior to the start of each project and will be overseen by our in-house advisors. This is to determine whether your property requires a lightning protection system and to find the best way to integrate it without compromising the aesthetic qualities of the building.
