One of the most important parts of a new roof is the sarking that lies underneath the slate or tiled roofing.
Sarking has been an integral part of roofing since roofers first began using slate to roof properties. On traditional properties roofing, teh sarking would have been made from sheets of wood (as so much of the properties structure would have been). More modern properties will commonly use treated softwood boards generally around 150mm wide.
These sarking boards are attached to the rafters of a pitched roof, helping to give extra strength to the buildings roofing structure.
In Scotland, sarking boards are an important part of the roofing construction as they help add strength and an extra layer of protection to your property from the extreme weather conditions such as high winds and heavy rain.
While sarking boards are specially treated to help prevent them from suffering at the hands of roof leaks, if your roof is in a serious state of disrepair, there is only so much that sarking can do to prevent water ingress.
New Roof Fitting
A new roof has many advantages for your home. Not only will it protect your home from the onslaught of winter wind and rain that the West Coast of Scotland is so famous for, but it can also provide superior thermal insulation for your property; saving you money in the long term compared with reduced energy bills and less ‘small’ repair jobs.
Always remember that re-roofing (whether slate or tiled) your home is an investment in your property. It will reduce your yearly maintenance costs for roofing work and it will increase the energy efficiency of your home. In the long run, this can work out far cheaper for you than the yearly maintenance requirements that require you to splash out on every winter.
If your homes roof is or has been suffering from constant nail rot sickness, frequent leaks and poor heat insulation then the cost of this relatively simple re-roofing service versus the frequent call outs for small repairs jobs can genuinely save you money whilst rectifying the core problem – something that overly frequent roofing maintenance will not do.
